Of the Faithful Departed cover

A novel of suspense and intrigue from the author of the Murdoch in Muskoka mystery series

Father William O’Brien had been parish priest in a small rural Ontario village for 28 years when, one morning in November 1987, he was found dead in his rectory. But why, in the event of his death, would a priest in an obscure parish leave a box containing a revolver and a journal entrusted to his friend Dr. James Maloney?

Dr. Maloney already suspected that Father O’Brien had been engaged in unusual and highly secret business for the Church during the last months of his life. The revelations in the journal, however, go far beyond anything the doctor could have imagined. With the communist regime in Poland tottering, Father O’Brien had been drawn into a dangerous plan devised at the request of the Vatican to get badly needed funds to the underground Solidarity movement.

Heading to a clandestine rendezvous in Europe with a suitcase full of cash, Father O’Brien is disturbed to learn that the Mafia has not only been recruited by the Vatican to protect him at all costs—even murder—but may have involved the Vatican in its money-laundering schemes. His faith is shaken even more when he falls in love with the beautiful woman the Mafia has recruited to extract from him crucial information even the mob doesn’t know.

Never sure who his enemies are, but certain that they want to kill him, Father O’Brien must outwit his adversaries even as he wrestles with moral issues that strike to the heart of what it means to be a Catholic priest.
